Photographs for your restaurant, in exchange for a meal

We photograph restaurants, cafes and bodegas in exchange for a meal for two and the room for one quiet morning, rather than a fee. You get the plates as they leave your kitchen, the room during real service, twenty five to forty edited photographs and three vertical videos, delivered within two weeks and licensed for your site, your delivery listings and your social accounts.

What a restaurant set has to do

Your Google profile fills up with photographs whether you supply them or not. If you do not, it fills up with a customer's phone shot of a half eaten plate under a ceiling light. This is what a usable set covers.

  • Six to ten plates, photographed in the ninety seconds after they leave the kitchen, which is the only time food looks like itself.
  • The room empty and the room full. One shows the space, the other shows that people come.
  • The bar or the counter, because that is what a passer by looks at through the window.
  • Hands working. The pass, the pour, the plating. It is the difference between a menu and a kitchen.
  • One or two of your team, named if they are willing. A face is what a regular remembers.
  • The produce or the supplier, if you have a story there. It is the part that gets written about.

The exchange

No invoice passes in either direction. If a trade is worth less to you than the photographs are worth to us, say so and we will adjust it or leave it. Note that a trade is still income for both sides in the eyes of a tax authority, and each of us handles our own.

When to shoot

A quiet morning for the room and the details, then one real service for the plates and the movement. We do not close you and we do not ask the kitchen to cook for the camera alone: everything we photograph goes out to a table afterwards, which is also why it looks like your food and not like a food styling exercise.

What owners ask

Do we have to close for this?

No. The room and the details are shot before service, and the plates are shot during a real service, in the window between the kitchen and the table. If a dish will not survive that, we photograph it before doors open instead.

Can we use these for delivery platforms?

Yes. The licence covers your own site, delivery and booking platforms, your social accounts, print and paid advertising, permanently.

Our dining room is dark. Is that a problem?

It is the normal case, not a problem. We shoot the room at the brightest hour it has and we light plates carefully rather than flooding the space. A dark room photographed honestly still reads as somewhere you want to sit.
