Photography traded for lodging, meals and experiences

Yes, some photographers will photograph your hotel, guesthouse, campervan fleet, restaurant or tour in exchange for a stay, a meal, the use of a vehicle or a place on the trip, rather than for a fee. We are two of them. A typical trade is three or four nights for a half day on location, thirty to fifty edited photographs and a set of vertical videos, delivered within two weeks and licensed for you to use anywhere.

What a trade actually costs you

These are the exchanges we have found work, by the kind of business. Every one is agreed in writing before the shoot, and every one is negotiable: this table is a starting point, not a price list.

Your businessWhat you offerWhat you get back
Hotel, guesthouse or casa ruralThree or four nights, off season is easier for both of usHalf a day on location, 30 to 50 edited photographs, 3 to 5 vertical videos
Campervan or vehicle rentalThree to five days of a comped or discounted rentalThe fleet on the road and on the lot, 30 to 50 edited photographs, 3 to 5 vertical videos
Restaurant, cafe or bodegaA meal for two, and the room for one quiet morningPlates and the room in service, 25 to 40 edited photographs, 3 vertical videos
Experience or tour operatorTwo places on a departure that is already runningThe activity as it actually runs, 30 to 50 edited photographs, 3 to 5 vertical videos
Product brandThe products, and the cost of shipping themA styled product set, 20 to 30 edited photographs, 2 to 3 vertical videos

No invoice passes in either direction. If a trade is worth less to you than the photographs are worth to us, say so and we will adjust it or leave it. Note that a trade is still income for both sides in the eyes of a tax authority, and each of us handles our own.

How a trade works

  1. We agree on the shoot and the trade before the trip starts, in writing, over email.
  2. We shoot in real conditions: your place, your rig, your service, the light you actually have.
  3. Within two weeks of getting home you get the edited set, high resolution, colour graded, licensed for your own site and social use.
  4. No invoice either way. If it is not a fit, no hard feelings and no obligation.

What arrives, exactly

Specification rather than adjectives, so you can tell whether it is worth a stay.

The photographs

Thirty to fifty edited frames for a lodging or vehicle shoot, high resolution, colour graded, delivered as a download you keep. Twenty five to forty for a restaurant, twenty to thirty for a product set.

The vertical videos

Three to five short form vertical cuts from the same shoot, sized for Instagram and TikTok, no watermark and no branding of ours on them.

The licence

Yours to use anywhere: your own website, your booking listings, your social accounts, print, paid advertising. We keep the right to show the work in our own portfolio and to license it as stock unless we agree otherwise in writing.

The timing

Delivered within two weeks of the shoot. If your season starts sooner than that, tell us before we agree, not after.

When a trade is the wrong choice for you

Four situations where you should hire someone instead, and we would rather tell you now than after you have held a room for us.

  • You have a fixed launch date with no flexibility. We travel, weather moves, and a trade has no penalty clause to protect you.
  • You need an interiors specialist with tilt shift lenses and a lighting crew. We shoot rooms honestly and well, and that is a different job from an architectural set.
  • You need contractual guarantees, agreed remedies and a service level. Those belong in a paid engagement, not a handshake.
  • You want photographs that show something your place does not have. We shoot what is there, which is the only thing that survives a guest arriving.

What we need from you

Small things, but the shoot depends on them.

  • Access, and someone who can open doors on the day.
  • One person willing to be in frame. A room with nobody in it reads as an empty room.
  • Honesty about your dates, so we can plan the trip around a yes.
  • An hour of tidying before we start. It is the cheapest thing either of us can do to make the photographs better.

Questions owners ask before writing to us

Is this really free?

There is no fee and no invoice, but it is not free: you give lodging, a meal, a rental or a place on a trip, and that has a real cost to you. It is a trade of one thing of value for another, which is why we publish what each side puts in rather than calling it free.

Why would a photographer work for a stay instead of money?

Because travel is the thing we want. We are based in Asturias and we photograph our way around Europe, so lodging, a vehicle or a place on a trip is worth more to us than the equivalent fee would be. It is a straight exchange of two things each side values more than what it gives up.

Who owns the photographs?

You get a licence to use them anywhere, permanently, including on booking listings and in paid advertising. We keep the copyright and the right to show the work in our portfolio and to license it as stock, unless we agree something different in writing before the shoot.

How long does the shoot take?

Half a day for a guesthouse or a restaurant, a full day for a larger property or a fleet, and for a tour or experience it is the length of the departure itself. We work around your service rather than closing you for the day.

What if the weather is bad?

We shoot anyway, and rain in the mountains photographs better than most owners expect. Where a specific shot genuinely needs sun, we say so on the day and we come back if we are still in the area.

Do you need model releases from our guests?

Yes, for anyone recognisable in a photograph we intend to use. We carry releases and we handle that ourselves, which is one of the practical differences between a working studio and an enthusiast offering a trade.

Where do you travel?

We are based in Asturias in northern Spain and travel across Spain, Portugal, Iceland and the rest of Europe. Travel is part of what we trade for, so a stay somewhere new is often the whole reason for the shoot.

How do we start?

Write to hello@loganventure.com or message us on WhatsApp with what you have to offer, what you would like photographed, and roughly when. We usually reply within a day, and we will tell you straight away if it is not a fit.

Tell us what you have and what you need photographed

Two lines is enough: what your place is, what you can offer, and roughly when. We reply within a day, and we say no clearly when a trade will not work.
