Photography traded for a stay in Asturias

We are based in Asturias, in northern Spain, and we photograph guesthouses, casas rurales, small hotels and the businesses around them in exchange for a stay or a meal rather than a fee. Being local means a shoot here does not depend on a trip: we can come for a morning, in the season your place looks best, and we know what the weather does.

Why here

We land in Asturias on the 23rd of August, looking for somewhere to stay through the 27th, any small local place, we are not particular about which town. We want to slow down and actually get to know the land, and we are hoping to meet people who are building something worth sticking around for. If a stay works out, we will photograph your place while we are there and leave you with real photographs to use afterward.

What we are looking for here

In rough order of how well the trade tends to work.

  • Casas rurales and small guesthouses, particularly ones inland and away from the coast road.
  • Hotels of ten rooms or fewer that are doing their own marketing.
  • Sidrerias, restaurants and cider houses with a room worth photographing.
  • Producers: cheese, cider, honey. The story is better than the product photography usually is.
  • Guides and small tour operators working in the Picos de Europa.

What photographing Asturias actually involves

Green Spain is green because it rains, and any photographer who promises you blue skies here has not worked here. The good news is that the light on an overcast Asturian morning is the best light there is for interiors and for food, and the mist coming off the hills is the thing visitors remember. We plan around it rather than waiting for it to stop: exteriors in the breaks, interiors when it closes in, and the coast in the hour before dusk when the light comes in sideways under the cloud.

Questions from owners here

Do you only work in high season?

The opposite. Out of season is when your rooms are free, which makes the trade cheap for you, and when the light here is at its best. October and November in Asturias photograph better than August does.

We are inland, an hour from anywhere. Is that a problem?

No, it is usually the reason to come. We travel with our own transport and the inland places are the ones with the character that photographs well. Tell us where you are and we will tell you honestly whether we can get there.

If you have a place in Asturias

Tell us what it is, which town, and roughly when suits you. We are local, so a morning is often all it takes to arrange.
